
Projeto Praça Onze was originally the name of a NIH-sponsored prospective HIV seroincidence cohort study based at Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. Since its creation in 1994, the major goal of Projeto Praça Onze is to actively contribute to the control of the HIV epidemic. To this end, its priorities include participation in vaccine development efforts, in clinical trials to develop better treatments for HIV infection and for the treatment and prevention of opportunistic diseases related to HIV/AIDS, as well as studies to test interventions to prevent the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.

Mauro Schechter, PhD, got his medical degree from Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro in 1977 and his PhD from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 1985. He is Professor of Infectious Diseases at the Departamento de Medicina Preventiva, Faculdade de Medicina, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro and Senior Research Scientist at the National Health Council of Brazil. Dr. Schechter is member of various national and international committees and research organizations and the Principal Investigator of Projeto Praça Onze. He has been working in HIV/AIDS research since 1994 including HIV vaccines, prevention and treatment.
